Extraction's Ending Flawlessly Explained

Netflix’s latest original feature, starring Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, alongside Bollywood sensation Randeep Hooda, is about as high-octane a thriller as any action fan could hope for. Through all the captivating action sequences and frenetic fight scenes, Extraction actually manages to tell a pretty complex story with an ambiguous ending that has fans abuzz with theories.

Extraction follows protagonist Tyler Rake, a former member of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment now working as an off-the-books mercenary. At the film’s outset, he’s engaged by fellow killer-for-hire Nik Khan to rescue the son of India’s leading drug kingpin, who is currently being held for an exorbitant ransom by rival Bangladeshi drug lord Amir Asif.

A hiccup during Rake’s attempted “extraction” of his target brings down the wrath of Saju, another former special operative currently in the employ of the Bangladeshi drug lord. Rake and Saju engage in a complex game of cat and mouse…

But they ultimately end up working together to outwit the authorities on their tails.

As far as action-thriller set-ups go, it’s about as compelling as they come, but viewers hoping for a clear-cut resolution that sees charismatic anti-hero Rake victoriously walking away from an explosion in slow motion were left with a real head scratcher. Let’s break Extraction’s ambiguous ending down with a little help from the film’s director, Sam Hargrave.

At the beginning of the film, shark-eyed mercenary Tyler Rake has an obvious death wish. His ambivalence toward his own continued survival is a big part of what makes him such a deadly merc. We learn that much of Rake’s nihilism stems from the death of his son, a loss that still haunts him.

It’s his relationship with Ovi, his target for extraction, that ultimately saves Rake from himself. As Rake begins to form a bond with Ovi, he no longer sees the drug heir as a simple job, but rather a kid whose life has become more important than his own.

By the time the film reaches its climactic shootout on the bridge, Rake takes a mortal wound to ensure Ovi’s safe escape. This emotional beat lands because we actually believe that Rake no longer wants to die, but has chosen to give up his life to save Ovi’s. So Rake gets to go to his grave feeling like he redeemed his soul, while Ovi lives to fight another day. Satisfying ending, right?

Not so fast.

After Ovi’s daring escape, the film presents a very unexpected coda. In the final moments of Extraction, Ovi jumps into a peaceful swimming pool, a mirror image of Rake’s first scene jumping off a cliff. When he comes up for air, he sees a blurry figure standing in the background who bears a striking resemblance to Rake, but the film ends before we get any actual confirmation. So, what gives?

As it turns out, Extraction’s final moments were left open to interpretation by design. Hargrave weighed in on the mystery surrounding this final scene. He told Collider:

“We had a version of the movie, and we tested it a lot, and it was not surprising that a lot of people wanted the character to live, and some people wanted him to die…If people on one hand feel like the story is complete and is a story of redemption through sacrifice, then for them, it’ll be where the kid is imagining [Rake standing there], and then now you go, ‘Yes, I’m satisfied.'”

Hargrave went on to explain, quote, “If you feel like you love Tyler Rake, and you love Chris Hemsworth, and you want a sequel, and you’re like ‘There’s no way, you can’t kill him!’ then that’s Tyler Rake standing there looking at you. So we kind of purposefully did not pull focus to the character standing there.”

For fans looking for a little more closure, Hargrave shared that the original screenplay for Extraction included a much more definitive ending. In screenwriter Joe Russo’s intended story, Tyler Rake very explicitly dies on the bridge, completing the character arc he started when he dove off that cliff in the initial scene. Hargrave told Collider that the test audiences weren’t crazy about the sacrifice, however.

He dished:

“People were torn; it was almost down the middle. We want to appeal to as many people as possible without compromising the integrity of the story. And so, we think a pretty good compromise is to make an ambiguous ending.”

Hargrave ultimately admitted that he prefers to imagine that Rake is dead by the film’s conclusion, claiming that he felt as though Rake had redeemed himself through sacrifice. For fans in desperate need of finality, that’s probably the best you’re going to get. The rest of us will have to learn to live with the ambiguity, at least until we get an Extraction 2. 1. The movie was surprisingly dull. I watched it thrice and I still haven't finished watching it. The action scenes were lit but the plot was thin, dialogue was weak. Chris's acting was the movie's only redemption. To think I counted hours waiting for the movie to be released.

  2. Remember at the start he held his breath in the river for long so what could that mean…. and the other way he is prob alive is when u see him watching the child come up from the water in his school

  3. Here’s how the sequel is possible : ovi told him those lines “you dont drown by falling into the river , but by getting submerged in it”. And at the end, tyler’s partner killed that Bangladeshi drug lord, that means she was there in Bangladesh. So it may be possible that she got tyler (idk how but lets just assume it anyway ).
P.S. this is just the possibility. If Netflix wanna make the sequel and earn more money.

Realistic ending: he got shot through his neck ( no way one can survive that ) so his partner came back after 8 months( enough time for things to get cooled down ) and killed that guy. To take her revenge (as she was somewhat attached to him maybe)

  4. That movie was boring, couldn’t finish it. & please explain how he got his ass kicked by the dude from stranger things… not believable.

  5. Yeah, no way he'd die. He's Thor, son of Odin. He took a beating from Thanos and a few bullet wounds would kill him? Pfft.

  6. Fact: No one can survive a 7.62 penetration on the neck, it would rip your vital veins out and the impact would break your neck bone

  7. I just watched this movie. Definitely an action packed movie with good camera work. But very much disappointed for presenting Dhaka and Bangladesh in such a wrong way.
    1. Using wrong accent Bangladeshi Bengali language. Most of the time accent was no where near how Bangladeshi people talk.
    2. Currently places of Dhaka aren't that much old and clumsy looking as it's shown.
    3. What's up with the Hindi songs playing in houses every time?? No, they don't play Hindi songs like every here there. Dhaka is not India.
    4. It's not a superhero movie. So how the rescuers of the kid are sooo accurate when ever they shooting? And opponents seems army or special forces.. so allll of them can't be that much dumb that they will miss shooting that one target cause they had special training for that. Looks like one man army. Duhh..
    5. And… A drug lord CAN NOT BUY or control whole Bangladesh Army. Such a bullshit concept that was by the director.
There are many more to say.. but enough said.

The director and others should have researched more about Bangladesh and Dhaka.

    Be realistic guys. Cheers!

  8. NETFLIX KNOWS BUSINESS!!!
JUST TO ATTRACT INDIAN AUDIENCES THEY LITERALLY MISREPRESENTED BANGLADESH. IT'S NOT THE DHAKA WE LIVE IN NOR THE KIDS OF DHAKA ARE DROWNED INTO CRIMES, GUNS, SUCH THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE. CORRUPTION IS IN ALL OVER THE WORLD BUT NOT THAT MUCH IN BANGLADESH THAT THE WHOLE CITY WILL BE UNDER LOCKDOWN JUST FOR A DRUG LORD, SERIOUSLY??? POLICE, ELITE FORCE, RAB, ARMY ALL OF THEM ARE HERE JUST FOR A DRUG LORD? THE DIRECTOR JUST DID THIS WITHOUT HAVING EVEN A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BANGLADESH OR ITS PEOPLE. THIS MOVIE IS JUST FOR BUSINESS WITHOUT REALITY. THIS MOVIE IS TO PLEASE A HUGE NUMBER OF INDIAN AUDIENCE.
AND THEY APPLIED YELLOW FILTER ON THE WHOLE SCENE OF DHAKA BUT NOT IN MUMBAI? OOH, MAN! DELHI, MUMBAI ARE MORE POLLUTED THAN DHAKA.

  9. I bet the sequel will be that Ovi gets kidnapped by his father who somehow got out of prison. Now Rake will have to extract the kid again from his father…

  10. Honestly seeing the woman kill Amir was way more satisfying to me than the possibility of Tyler being alive.

Now if only someone would smack Fahrad hard enough his generations to come feel it.

But let me be honest. I don’t think he should survive. Yeah it’s possible he was retrieved and the gave him some of that electricity to revive him but that’s meh. If they do that then this movie is nothing but a cliché. One hour thirty something minutes excluding end credits of struggle and tonnes of action turns out protag didn’t die after all. Meh, seen it millions of times it’s old and who likes it is kinda lame. Instead they should prequel this.

  11. In my opinion not worth watching….story line is pathetic…plss explain how the kid just suddenly appear in the middle of the bridge with all those police..and how the teen gangs find them….hahaha

  12. Great film which I'm sure they new it was, so if they wanted a 2nd why did Tyler die there no surviving with all his wounds and gun shots and on top of that he fell in the river which I'm pretty f in sure it's not clean. Maybe a prequel but no sequel as it would be far fetched tooooo much.

  13. I hate this kind of endings. Make your own story. If he is dead he is dead if he is alive he is alive. You can't satisfy everyone. So the ending is if you want to give more money he is alive. Sad… Explains the rating on imdb.

  14. A sequel, yeah okay thats fine, but not with Tyler, go with Ovi instead. Maybe because of the trauma he had and Tyler became an inspiration for him growing up? Just ideas out there…

  15. Plot Twist, Rake is alive. Now hear me out. Why else would Ovi dive into the water and stay at the bottom like Tyler did? It showed the drug dealer die at a different time while Ovi was at the pool. Ovi was there during day time and the drug dealer was killed at night? Different time zones? When Ovi came up there was dude standing there that looks like Rake. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

  16. I really enjoyed the movie!!! All characters were developed enough for the story and the actors did a great job. Hemsworth did a fantastic job in the acting as well as the physicality and dynamic violence his character required. He was very believable as an ex-SpecOp….not the hyper fantasy of a John Wick..which I also enjoy.
I understand the vagueness the director left at the end of the movie, but I want Rake to survive and would love to see Hemsworth continue with the character. The other actor that was his nemesis did a fantastic job too and I would watch him in any new movies as well.

  17. Randeep Hooda was excellent along with Chris Hemsworth in this movie…man did these two put in some solid work to bring this chaotic action to life.💪
